Dear Readers,
This section will bring you weekly updates on what is new in the world of NorthwestPrimeTime.com.
Sometimes we'll bring news alerts, but most often will report on the stories with the most views for the previous week.
For the past week, here are the most viewed stories:
- Accessory Dwelling Units Help Ease Housing Shortage was this week’s top viewed article after coming in fourth last week. Submitted by AARP Washington, the article discusses a bill in Olympia that would support a type of flexible housing called Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs. ““ADUs can fill several roles, like providing a place for an aging parent to live instead of a nursing home,” said Cathy MacCaul, AARP Washington Advocacy Director. “ADUs can be used as living quarters for a caregiver or a relative who requires care, or for an adult child who may need to return home after college, has lost a job, or for one of many life-changing moments. ADUs can also be used for additional finances for someone on a fixed income.”
- An article about Dick Van Dyke was in second place last week and placed second again. The article featuring the 97-year-old television legend was posted back in December in honor of his birthday. However, when he appeared on “The Masked Singer” on February 15, views spiked. The article continues to attract readers. On the show, Van Dyke sang “When You’re Smiling” while disguised as a gnome. “I was positive they wouldn’t be able to guess who I was. And I was right!” he told People magazine. For an encore, he sang “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from his movie, Mary Poppins, He told People that he goes to the gym three days a week…Exercise is the answer,” he said about staying active in old age. Here are three different clips from the Dick Van Dyke’s appearance on the show: The first clip presents clues to his identity. The second presents the performance of Dick Van Dyke disguised as the Gnome. The last clip is “the reveal,” where he shows his famous, smiling face.
- For the past three weeks, an article, Want to Live by the Ocean? Is making the rounds. It was originally published last summer but has made a comeback. It explores the most affordable West Coast ocean beach towns, with a focus on five in Washington State: Copalis Beach, Grayland, Westport, Moclips and Ocean Shores. The report also calls out Blaine, next to the Canadian border, as a pleasant, affordable beach town (although not on the ocean).
- Views of Margaret Larson’s piece from February 1st surged again this past week, Making Retirement Fun. “Done properly, I think retirement should feel like recess at school,” writes Margaret. “Creativity, self-expression, and discovery are building blocks for life qualities including better mood, self-esteem, and even longevity. For inspiration, I talked to five Northwesterners who are walking this revitalizing path.” If you haven’t read the article yet, check it out.
- Finger Foods for Seniors includes recipes for bite-size “meals” that are high in protein, easy to chew and swallow, and provide balanced nutrition. This article was written to help people who may have trouble handling utensils, such as those with tremors, dementia, or other conditions. Whether you have trouble with utensils or not, these recipes by Katy Wilkens would probably be a hit at any gathering.
See you next week.
