Soaring high above Oʻahu, from my comfy perch in a Blue Hawaiian helicopter, I marveled at the diversity of the island. From craggy cliffs and mountains to dramatic coastlines, verdant valleys and lush rainforests, this special slice of paradise has it all.
You may know Karolyn Grimes as Zuzu, the little girl in It’s a Wonderful Life who declares, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” You may not realize “Zuzu” spent the last 20 years calling Washington State home.
My wife, Chris, and I put our roots down in Shoreline more than three decades ago, where we raised two children. After our retirement a couple of years ago, we wanted to put more of our energy into our community.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to social isolation, but there are lots of ways older adults can get involved in the community whether that’s trying an exercise class, volunteering or a joining a local hobby group.

Rather than collecting shells, bring a trash bag and litter stick or gloves next time you go for a stroll on the beach. Collecting litter from shorelines reduces the chance of contaminating the water and harming sea life.
