There was only one cupcake left.
It was frosted with chocolate goo.
All of the children would want it.
What else was a mother to do?

With no thought for my personal welfare,

I quickly took note of my plight,
and selflessly threw myself on it

and ate it so they wouldn’t fight.
Pat D’Amico is a Washington State angel of cupcake allotment and many other topics for stories and poems.

Send your stories and photos to Tell local or personal stories; discuss concerns around aging and other issues; share solutions, good luck, and reasons to celebrate; poems are fine too. Pieces may be edited or excerpted. We reserve the right to select among pieces. Photos are always a plus and a one-sentence bio is requested (where you live, maybe age or career, retired status, etc.).
