LAST MONTH'S CONTEST

Arleen of Bellevue is the winner of last month's contest, which featured Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park.

Lake Crescent Lodge on the Olympic Peninsula in northwest Washington was built in 1915 and many visitors use it as a base camp for enjoying Olympic National Park while experiencing the charm of a turn-of-the-century lakefront resort.

The resort and surrounding cabins started life as a fishing lodge called "Singer's Tavern." Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the lodge in September 1937 while researching Congress' proposal to create Olympic National Park. The final bill establishing Olympic National Park was signed on June 29, 1938.

You can also read an essay about the day President Roosevelt visited the lodge in a reminiscence by Mary Lou Hanify, who was a teenager when the President looked over the wilderness area now known as Olympic National Park. This essay is courtesy of HistoryLink.org, the free online encyclopedia of Washington state history. The charming tale even outlines Roosevelt's dinner at the lodge, which included Olympic Blackberry Jam, Olympic Oyster Cocktails, Dungeness Crab, Grays Harbor Cranberry Sherbet and Olympic Blueberry or Wild Blackberry Pie.
