Tips for creating an indoor garden

You can create amazing indoor gardens in any size space, from a windowsill to a room-sized wonder. The type of garden you wish to cultivate depends on your dreams of a peaceful indoor sanctuary.

Basic tips for creating an indoor garden

The beginner may wish to start off slow and simply, with a windowsill or pot garden. Advanced gardeners may be able to take an indoor courtyard or sunroom and create an outdoorsy refuge filled with peaceful walkways and garden benches surrounded with greenery and flowering plants. No matter how experienced you are, the first tip for any garden space is to have a plan.

Making a Physical Garden Plan

Begin your indoor gardening on paper.

First, take a sheet of paper and make a layout of your physical planting design for your dream garden.

Be sure to include notes about where lighting will come from, that is, windows, skylights, or artificial lighting.

Is there a view from another room that you want to take advantage of?

You will need a source of water nearby.

Planning for Garden Plants

What is important here is to select plants that will do well in your available lighting, plants that are compatible with each other, and plants that you want most to include in your garden. For example, if the garden will be herbs, select those you want to harvest. If it is a flower garden, select flowering plants or bulb plants that will fit your space and that you will enjoy.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Decide first where you want your indoor garden. Then, do you want multiple indoor gardens in different areas of the building? Which plants need a sunny location? Which prefer shade? Do you want to cultivate herbs, flowering plants, cactus plants, bulbs, ferns, greens or vegetables? All can be grown successfully indoors; the only limit here is your imagination in most cases.

Problems

Enjoyable indoor gardening is not completely carefree. You still must guard your plants against mold, pests and feed them properly. Consult brochures that accompany plant purchases or find a garden reference manual. Each type of plant has some special requirements for healthy growth and to keep them free of pests. Spacing apart from other plants is important, as is soil type and adequate drainage to avoid over-watering and root rot.

Benefits of Indoor Gardening

Plants are very useful indoors. They help clean the air of minute chemicals that might be released from building materials and upholstery. They add humidity to dry indoor air, especially helpful during dry winter months when indoor heating is turned on. As a hobby, indoor gardening is a pleasant activity that just about anyone can enjoy. Finally, there is peace and tranquility to be enjoyed when viewing your finished garden creation.
