Lanterns for Hope and Peace

An annual lantern festival takes place at Green Lake on August 6

From Hiroshima to Hope has been held every year since 1984, except for the cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic. The event is sponsored by local community organizations. To view Northwest Prime Time’s full calendar, link here: Northwest Prime Time Calendar of Events

On Sunday, August 6, Seattle’s Green Lake will reflect candle-lit lanterns following an evening of speakers, music, dance, taiko drumming and poetry.

This annual event, Lanterns for Hope and Peace to Light Green Lake, is a peace ceremony to mark the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Presentations begin at 7pm. Lantern preparation begins at 6pm. The candle-lit ceremony, accompanied by traditional flute music, begins at 8pm, with lanterns floating on the lake at dusk.

The event is free and open to the public. It is held just south of the Bathhouse, on Green Lake’s northwest shore near West Green Lake Drive North and Stone Avenue North. For more information, call 206-928-2590 or visit http://fromhiroshimatohope.org.
