Seniors Keeping Active

Keeping active for seniors can be accomplished in so many different ways. I do this by going to the Senior Centers where they have activities I’d like to engage in such as writing, dancing, doing arts and crafts, and physical activities.

The centers offer varieties of physical and mental activities which seniors can select from. Going to them is one way I get out of the house instead of just sitting in front of the television.

Last fall, one of the Senior Centers offered Zumba and Rock N Roll classes for free. I took advantage of them, glad they weren’t costing me any money. The center told us that a grant was paying for the exercise instructor. Going to these classes are a joy for me. It’s my opportunity to keep myself active…as my doctor has ordered. Although it was a struggle for me to do the exercises, I always managed to attend regularly. I feel a lot better exercising with a group. It’s better than jogging or walking alone.

One important benefit from classes is the people I meet and the friendships I form with other seniors. They become my friends and my support system, sharing many interesting life experiences. Life is getting better and happier for me by continuing to be active in these Zumba and Rock N Roll exercises.

SHARING STORIES is a weekly column for and about the 50 plus crowd living in the Puget Sound region. Send your stories and photos to ariele@comcast.net. Tell local or personal stories; discuss concerns around aging and other issues; share solutions, good luck, and reasons to celebrate; poems are fine too. Pieces may be edited or excerpted. We reserve the right to select among pieces. Photos are always a plus and a one-sentence bio is requested (where you live, maybe age or career, retired status, etc.).
