I Have a Tree

Outside my front window,

I have a tree.

Inside my mind, I have a lover,

a friend.

I have a tree.

Every morning when I greet

the day—one quick look and

my tree is there to say—

DON’T waste the day.

I have a tree.

Every season, my tree sings a different song.

Winter with all her bones dry and ugly and bare,

she beats my roof and window.

She tells me she’s still here.

I have a tree.

After winter has come and gone—

a new song is sung all day long.

Look how smooth her bark has become—

look how strong her trunk has grown.

I have a tree.

Spring brings green on all her bare bones.

She feels so handsome—soaking up the sun.

Look out world, her show has just begun.

Millions of bright pink and white blossoms appear.

It’s her way of saying I love you, dear.

I have a tree.

After the hummingbird has done her bit,

The tree sheds all this glory and rests a bit.

I have a tree.

It is now summer and she dances and shines—in morning sun.

She waves to me all day long.

Gentle winds and golden light make our lives a simple delight.

I have a tree.

How wonderful life can be!

I have a secret lover—and Her love sustains me.

I have a tree.

Roger Wilson died last year, but his books Loving Life: A Roughneck’s Guide to Having It All at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OEHXA3Y and Loving Wife: Roughneck Guide to a Happy Marriage at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RPBD59U are excellent examples of how to savor life and love, how to have the most happiness possible. I know Roger is sending all his best loving thoughts to all his friends and everyone else too!

SHARING STORIES is a weekly column for and about the 50 plus crowd living in the Puget Sound region. Send your stories and photos to ariele@comcast.net. Tell local or personal stories; discuss concerns around aging and other issues; share solutions, good luck, and reasons to celebrate; poems are fine too. Pieces may be edited or excerpted. We reserve the right to select among pieces. Photos are always a plus and a one-sentence bio is requested (where you live, maybe age or career, retired status, etc.).

SHARING STORIES is featured on http://www.northwestprimetime.com, the website for Northwest Prime Time, a monthly publication for baby boomers, seniors, retirees, and those contemplating retirement. The newspaper can be found in the greater Seattle area and other Puget Sound locations. For more information, call 206-824-8600 or visit http://www.northwestprimetime.com. To find other SHARING STORIES articles on this website type “sharing stories” in the search function above.
