Video games were largely seen as an anti-social, indoors, low-impact kind of activity, especially 10 or 20 years ago. They were something for you to do when you had absolutely nothing else going on. Today, the image that these games have in the public eye has changed considerably.

Today, games are social devices, encouraging players to connect from around the world. They're portable, allowing you to play on your cell phone when out and about. Video games are now not only entertaining, but also physically challenging. Here are some of the top fitness games if you want to try your hand at video game exercise:

Wii Fit Plus

Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus are two of the games that helped to really kick off this fitness trend in games, especially the latter. It's both a video game, with ranks and scores and challenges, and a full fitness routine, charting your progress and pushing you to be your very best. With the Wii Fitness Board, this is one of the first big games to work out your whole body, and not just your thumbs.

Kinect Sports

For the Xbox 360 Kinect, Kinect Sports features a wide range of activities from soccer to tennis, and even bowling! A step up from Wii Sports, Kinect Sports requires your whole body to get involved, not just your wrists. Make sure you have plenty of living room space before playing this one.

Dance Central

For the Kinect, Dance Central is one of the first workout games to take us away from exercise and sports and into the world of dance. If you've never really been that into push-ups and volleyball, this is a good way to stay in shape while having a lot of fun.
