There is a group of Santa’s Helpers out there bringing holiday cheer to seniors in the area.
A recent visit to 83-year-old Louis Fote of Tacoma saw the helpers decorate his tree and give him a special gift to commemorate his beloved canine companion.“Louis suffers from dementia and diabetes,” says Melissa Brown from the Senior Helpers organization, which provides non-medical in-home care for seniors in need. “His daughter helps him as much as possible, but she relies on Senior Helpers to check on him, help him around the house, prepare his meals and take him out to his favorite restaurants when she’s not able to be there.”The holidays can be an especially challenging time for many people. Seniors may have a particularly difficult time, especially if they are facing health challenges or find themselves alone. Some may be spending their first holiday after the death of a spouse.Melissa adds, “Louis lost his longtime companion, Gizmo, his dog of 17 years. It was a very difficult loss.” When the Santa’s Senior Helpers decorated Louis’ house, they brought along a special ornament featuring a photo of Gizmo. The ornament now hangs on Louis’ tree. On a brighter note, Rico, his daughter’s dog, has become Louis’ companion, offering comfort and happiness.
Senior Helpers hope to inspire others in the community to help an elderly neighbor in need, making the holiday brighter for them. Some activities to consider are decorating their homes, shopping for and wrapping gifts, writing and mailing holiday cards. Or just drop by with a plate of holiday treats. A greeting and a big smile can go a long way in brightening the day of a senior.
