A free event on Saturday August 6, In the Spirit Native Festival, takes place at three Tacoma arts museums

If you’ve never been to the “In the Spirit Arts Market & Native Festival,” this is a great year to go.
The annual event takes place on Saturday, August 6 from 10am to 5pm.Visitors to this FREE festival will experience performances by Native singers, dancers and musicians, plus an extensive arts and hand-crafted goods market, along with free admission to the Tacoma museums that host the event: Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and Museum of Glass.In addition to the performances and arts market, visitors can experience a Native-designer fashion show, watch Native glass artists create at the Museum of Glass HotShop, and take part in art-making stations for free, including making prints inspired by Native artworks and making buttons.Associated exhibitions at the museums include new pieces of art in Native Portraiture: Power and Perception as well as On Native Land, featuring landscape paintings paired with land acknowledgments.Event Schedule

  • 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Museum of Glass – Manolo Aguilera, Indigenous-Mexican from the Veracruz region, will create in the Hot Shop at Museum of Glass. Note: Manolo will take a break from 1:00-2:00 PM.
  • 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM Museum of Glass – Weave-in with The Hazel Pete Institute of Chehalis Basketry
  • 12:00 PM Washington State History Museum – Community blessing and welcome with Connie McCloud, Cultural Director of the Puyallup Tribe
  • 12:15 PM Washington State History Museum – performance by renowned flute musician Vince Redhouse, Navajo
  • 12:30-1:00 PM Tacoma Art Museum – Curator’s Tour of the Haub Family Wing
  • 1:00 PM Tacoma Art Museum – Native Designers Runway Fashion Show
  • 2:00 PM Tollefson Plaza (Pacific Avenue across from the Tacoma Art Museum) – Puyallup artist Qwalsius (Shaun Peterson) will lead a short tour of his work, spuyaləpabš/Welcome Figure. Carved in a style unique to the Puyallup People, spuyaləpabš/Welcome Figure is a modern take on a local traditional art form.
  • 2:00-4:00 PM Tacoma Art Museum studio – Watch live painting by Tacoma artist Paige Pettibon, Salish, whose work is on view in TAM’s exhibition Native Portraiture: Power and Perception.
  • 2:00 PM Washington State History Museum – Award-winning musician, singer and songwriter Rona Yellow Robe, Cree
  • 3:00 PM Washington State History Museum – Returning visitors’ favorite, Alaska Kuteeyaa Dancers
  • 4:00 PM Washington State History Museum – People’s Choice Award – Museum staff will announce the results of in-gallery voting for People’s Choice award in the 17th annual IN THE SPIRIT Contemporary Native Arts juried exhibition.
  • 5:00 PM Festival ends. Museums and vendors close for the day

  • Price Family Fry Bread Tacos – The Price Family, Navajo and Port Gamble S’Klallam, will have tasty fry bread and delicious fry bread tacos for purchase on the plaza at the Washington State History Museum.
  • Anthem Café at the History Museum, serving from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • TAM Café in the museum’s main lobby, serving 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
  • Incalmo at Museum of Glass, serving from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM
