METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING…..

COMPOSED BY (the muse of)

F. Xavier Harrison

It matters little how (well) you play the game,and whether you’ve garnered wealth and/or fame;the denouement (the ending) – is always the same;

‘tis Newton’s Law of Entropy which is to blame;

50 years hence, will anyone remember your name?

Even if you showed great promise when you started,

All too soon, you’ll be one of the dearly departed;

But this game is rigged; you can’t possibly win it,

and you won’t know that, when at first you begin it,

(at the time of your birth); so, here’s my take on it,

…for whatever it’s worth: just live each day as if

it’s your last one on earth, don’t jump to the future,

eschew the past; There’s no point in trying to suture

all those open cuts in your psyche (think scar tissue);

– or re-edit your personal history; (that’s not the issue);

to resolve that perennial mystery: just where do we go …

when we die? (at the dissolution and death of the ego)…

Scripture says there is a destination, and that we ought

to believe it; after due deliberation……… I think not!

My religious indoctrination resulted in a profound schism

which I resolved by converting to (what else?) Darwinism.

I’m not into metaphysics, and I’m not a ‘New Ager’;

and just for the record, I reject “Pascal’s wager”

and his flawed argument to boot; but as he’s not

available, my rebuttal is moot. However, I will

say this: to do as he suggests is most hypocritical.

As to other theological arguments, I am ecumenical.

MORE METAPHORS (pithy similes, which you may freely quote)

The past is a canceled check (which you’re sorry you wrote)

The future? a good analogy might be … a promissory note

The present? you might think of it as ‘disposable income’

which cannot be ‘saved’; it must be spent.

to waste it is a sin you’ll surely repent.

We’ve got to give back what we have been lent:

Awareness! a wondrous gift! it wasn’t meant…

to last forever; even the universe will succumb…

eventually; We think we know how it will turn out]-

Life’s endeavor; that all the stars will burn out:

then the flow of time itself is ended.

(to dwell on such imponderables is not recommended).

It’s said the world will end in fire, not ice; anyhow,

the guru, Ram Dass, had this advice: be here now.
