Local Retiree is a Fabric Designer by Day…Watercolor Artist by Night

Seattleite Karen Roti embarked on a fulfilling new career in the arts when she retired from the healthcare industry

Karen Roti, one of the fabric designers for a local Seattle company, Clothworks, also spends her time creating watercolor paintings. She has been designing fabric for about three years and now uses her artwork for both venues.

Karen Roti has long been connected with the local senior community, even before she retired. She was the Marketing Director for medical services at the University of Washington, and Ballard Hospital (now Swedish Ballard). While at the hospitals, she worked with Northwest Prime Time to bring the best medical care available to seniors of the Pacific Northwest – personal healthcare clinics, specialty care, and surgical procedures, like hip and knee replacements. She has always believed in the power of reliable, accurate communications and aligned the medical communications with publications like Northwest Prime Time. “I worked with Prime Time for years and was thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful publication,” says Karen.

“As many senior adults already know, retirement provides an opportunity to explore different interests that were not possible before and I encourage seniors to explore and develop things that they always dreamed of doing,” Karen continues. “I had been painting for three years, stuck away in my home, before I felt confident enough to start showing my work. All of life is a process and possibilities are boundless if you just start, try and keep at it. You are not too old to start something new! Moses was 80 years old when he led the children of Israel out of Egypt.”

Karen Roti’s new fabric design, Garden Joy, is available to order (will ship in October). Her artwork is currently on display in West Seattle at Hotwire coffee house, 4410 California Avenue SW (open 6:30am to 7pm daily). For more information, visit karenroti.com
