SEATTLE, WA – Mentoring Movement is a community that helps people break down the barriers they have to being active. It provides the public with access to mentors from various professions within the exercise and fitness community and sets up support structures that help keep them moving. Mentoring Movement’s long term vision is to create a community that fosters the current shift towards overall health and fitness, as well as create support networks that allow people to find the exercise, sport, or activity that lights them up and keeps them off the couch.
“An Exercise for Everyone” – the launch event for the Mentoring Movement community – will feature speakers on topics like nutrition and exercise; how body image relates to fitness; and the experience of summiting Mt Rainier at age 70. There will also be demonstrations about different activities, such as Zumba and Weight Lifting. Fitness experts from local businesses will have tables, where they offer information and discounts to try out their type of exercise. Attendees of the event will be able to find the type of activity that best suits their lifestyle and needs in one convenient, welcoming environment, and have the opportunity to get ongoing support from the Mentoring Movement community.
Uyyek created this community while coaching in the Landmark Education Self Expression and Leadership Program. Part of the coursework was to create a project that benefits the community. Landmark Education is a training and development company that specializes in fostering the growth of communication and leadership skills.
“An Exercise for Everyone” will be on April 20, 2013 from 3:30–5:30pm at the Greenwood Senior Center. Tickets to the event will be sold on Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets are $10/each in advance, and $12/each day of event. Children 12 and under are free. All proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics.
“I saw a real need to provide support for people starting to exercise,” says Uyyek. “It’s easy for people to become isolated and there’s a feeling of being trapped, of not knowing how to connect with activities that you might enjoy, creating barriers to movement. I saw the opportunity to break those barriers by providing access for people that they wouldn’t otherwise have.”
