How sleep could save your marriage

Couples who decide to sleep in separate beds are on the increase, according to the National Sleep Foundation. The NSF claims that in recent years, the number of couples sleeping separately has doubled, and that may increase in the future. This trend is even seen in the building industry, with custom homes now being built with split master bedrooms.

Sleeping separately is not necessarily a bad thing, say many relationship professionals. In fact, separate beds could even save marriage from divorce. There are numerous things that can cause problems in the bedroom besides money and sex. Snoring is a number one problem for many people, male and female. Sleep disorders take many forms, and snoring is one reason people do not get a good night’s sleep, which results in tiredness and irritability.

People develop different body rhythms and sleep patterns. Some people are very light sleepers and the slightest movement or sound can awaken them easily. Mattress manufacturers have addressed this problem by offering split King-size mattresses that are adjustable for each person. Many older persons have decided that separate rooms offer them the best opportunity to get a good night’s sleep.

Not getting enough sleep can cause disastrous problems in a relationship and interfere with intimacy. Physical problems that arise with age can also cause sleep disruption. During the perimenopause and during menopause years, women experience night sweets, hot flashes, insomnia, and the resulting damp clothing, all of which interfere with sleep and sex. Boomers who opt for sleeping in separate beds and/or separate rooms can actually have better sex and intimacy because they are more rested.

Sleeping in separate rooms can save your marriage and it’s worth a try. The main focus should be on having a great relationship and excellent health so you can enjoy intimate moments and a vigorous sexual relationship. Not getting enough sleep can cause a divorce; it’s sad but true.
