Middleball: The all-ages sport

Just about everyone wants to stay healthy and active as long as possible, and participating in sports and recreational activites can help achieve that goal. However many sports, like baseball and football, aren’t necessarily for every age and ability. One way to stay active without busting out the helmet and pads is to take up middleball.

Middleball is similar to volleyball in many ways. It’s a low impact sport that involves volleying a ball back and forth over a net with the object of keeping the ball airborne. However there are some differences. Instead of a semi-hard volleyball, middleball players use a beach ball. Depending on who is playing, the rules (and net) can be adjusted to suit the players. The middleball court can be divided in two, or it can be divided again into four or eight teams, inspiring friendly competition.

This versatility makes middleball not only a great exercise for seniors, but a great sport for the whole family. It’s a great way to get everyone out into the backyard, and because it is very hard to get injured by a beach ball. Even the littlest grandchildren can participate! Here’s a middleball tip: Hit the ball at an upright angle either with your fists, forearms, or the palms of your hands. This keeps the ball in control, lessening the desire to dive after it!

Whether you are looking for a way to stay active and play with the kids, or they just want to have the chance to feel like a kid yourself, middleball is a great way to get the ball rolling on senior fitness.
