Eating on the fly: Foods to avoid before getting on a plane

Eating healthy while traveling isn’t always about watching your waistline or paying strict attention to what your doctor ordered. The fact is, air travel is a lot more cruel to some people than it is to others. Some people are visited by the nausea demons without fail, and still others discover that what they ingested just before settling into their seats and buckling up can come back to haunt them in a serious way. If this sounds like you — or if you desperately want to avoid becoming this person — then consider a few smart and healthy eating tips before getting on a plane.

Avoid fast foods. This is easier said than done, especially if hunger strikes when you’re at an airport and all you’ve got to choose from are fast food stands. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to plan ahead by packing a few healthy snacks that you can munch on until you’ve reached your destination and you can get yourself in front of a sensible plate of food that won’t put your stomach in knots.

Don’t drink alcohol. While this may sound counterintuitive to the individual who’s terrified of flying and for whom a stiff drink can help smooth out the experience, consuming alcohol before and during a flight can actually make matters worse on your stomach. If you absolutely cannot make it through even a short flight without imbibing, however, be sure to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Take a pass on sodas. It’s quite tempting to take up that friendly flight attendant on your free choice of carbonated drink and bag of peanuts to help pass the time during a flight, but if you’re interested in some healthy eating tips that will also help make your travel less uncomfortable from gas and bloating, opt for water instead. You’ll not only make the flight more pleasant for yourself, but also for your fellow travelers who have to share the same air.

Eating healthy while traveling can be difficult — being away from home, there’s always the temptation to eat out rather than find a way to make a good old fashioned home cooked meal. But if you’re someone who’s prone to uncomfortable gas and bloating during flights, going that extra mile could save you from regretting having given in to convenience.
