Pilates versus Yoga: Which suits you better?

Yoga and Pilates are both great mind-body awareness tools, but what is the difference between yoga and Pilates, and which is best for you?

There are various forms of movement therapies that promote your physical as well as emotional well being, with a focus on a series of specific actions. Yoga and Pilates are both great mind-body awareness tools, but what is the difference between yoga and Pilates, and which is best for you?

Yogis believe that the body and mind are one and that it can find harmony and actual heal itself. Practicing yoga makes you more aware of your body, the alignment, posture, and movement. It also helps to make the body flexible and enables you to relax during stressful times. Yoga movements are typically performed on a special yoga mat and use the weight of the body for resistance. Concentration is put on the movement from one posture to the other and it is a good choice if you want to be more energetic, stronger, happier, and peaceful.

Pilates shares the same goals, but the main difference between yoga and Pilates is that Pilates also incorporates work on the Pilates machines in addition to the matwork. Exercises are routinely repeated, with an emphasis on quality not quantity. The center of the movements in Pilates focuses on the core and making it stronger. Pilates movements are meant to stabilize and lengthen the spine, improve balance, strengthen the abdominals, and improve posture and strength. Benefits from Pilates are many and include a leaner, healthy, more balanced and much stronger body.

A great idea is to combine the two movement therapies and reap the benefits from Pilates and yoga for a stress free, healthier, and stronger you.
