How to protect outdoor furniture

It’s sad, but true. Patio season has ended for the year and it’s time to store your outdoor furniture for the winter, if you haven’t already done so. Do you know the best way to store your furniture so that it’s protected against the elements when you’re not using it?

How to Protect Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture is expensive. It’s not difficult to pay hundreds of dollars for a quality table and chairs. You want to keep these items looking their best for years to come. Here’s how to best protect your outdoor furniture during the winter months:

Clean your furniture thoroughly. Before you store your chairs and tables for the off-season, be sure to wash them thoroughly with a soapy rag to remove any mildew, dirt or particles that can scratch or otherwise damage the pieces over the winter. To avoid rust and/or mold from forming, let the furniture dry completely in the sun before storing them.

Paint your furniture. A coat of latex paint adds a good layer of protection from moisture and harmful UV rays. If you’d rather keep the beauty of the natural wood, consider adding a coat of outdoor varnish. Note that varnishes do tend to darken over time.

Use outdoor furniture covers. Using furniture covers is an easy way to extend the life of your outdoor furniture. Moisture is the number one enemy of wooden and metal furniture, and quality, water-resistant covers help reduce the risk of rust, wood rot, mold and mildew.

Take it indoors. If you have the room and the energy, your furniture will last longer if you store it away from the snow and moisture. The area you choose doesn’t have to be heated. Sheds, garages and enclosed patios make good places for winter furniture storage.

Although caring for your outdoor furniture takes time and money, your investment will pay off by adding many extra years to the life of your patio chairs and tables.
