Indoor water sports to try in the cold-weather season

Indoor swimming is probably one of the most rewarding hobbies available to people of any age. From diving to just plain swimming laps back and forth across the pool, it's a great way to stay in shape, to stay active, and most of all, to have a lot of fun. Here are some sports to try at the indoor pool the next time it gets a little too cold for outdoor activity.

Water Polo

If you love games like football and basketball in the summer months, water polo features the same team-based challenge, the same level of strategic play and the same non-stop physical challenges of a game of soccer but in the pool. The only trick is getting two full teams together, but thankfully, the indoor pool is a little easier to populate past October, so it shouldn't be so hard getting people interested in an organized game now and then.

Synchronized Swimming

Ever wish you could be in a musical? Synchronized swimming offers the social interaction, the fun and challenge of a team based sport like water polo but with lower impact and a more organized approach to movement. Pulling off a graceful routine without missing a beat lends an enormously rewarding feeling of satisfaction that just has to be experienced.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics are not only a great way to stay healthy and energized through the winter, they also help you maintain muscle mass, which tends to dissipate to some extent as your body changes through the colder months. Water aerobics help you maintain a powerful cardiovascular system, which in turn promotes blood flow and keeps protein flowing to your muscles. You can do them alone or take a class with other swimmers.

However you decide to stay active, the important thing is that you stay active. The body tends to gain a lot of weight in the winter months and lose all that work you put into staying in shape for the rest of the year, so staying fit is of the utmost importance. Don't let winter keep you down. Schedule a trip to the nearest indoor pool and stay active.
