Baking projects for grandparents and grandkids

Finding fun and stimulating activities to share with your grandkids is one of the many perks of being a grandparent. A baking project or two is an excellent way to spend a morning or afternoon with your grandkids because it’s creative, it's a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives, and it's, well, tasty.

Pre-baking brainstorm

Before you start the baking process, sit down with your grandkids and have a brainstorming session during which you figure out what shapes and colors you’d like to make for cookies. This will help your grandkids learn about the baking process from beginning to end. If your grandkids are 4 years old or older, then take them with you to the grocery store to purchase the ingredients needed. If you are going to bake cookies have the kids draw shapes on a piece of paper to give you an idea of what cookie cutters you’ll need to pick up, if you don’t have them already.

Baking stations

Once you have all of the ingredients, set up stations in your kitchen for each step. A station for mixing, a station for rolling, a station for putting them on the baking sheet, and so on. Go through each step with your grandchildren. This way they’ll feel more involved than if they were merely watching you bake and they'll be able to understand the sequence.

Baking calendar

If your grandkids enjoy your first baking project, then ask them what they’d like to bake next and use that to create a baking calendar. You and your grandchild can buy a new calendar or print a blank one off the Internet and color it together. This will give your grandkids something fun to look forward to on their next visit.

Recipes etc.

Find recipes designed for kids at VeryBestBaking.com. Here you’ll find the recipes for chocolate chip traffic lights, chocolate chip ladybugs, peanut butter and jelly cookies, bumblebee cookies, chocolate granola bars and more.

Baking with your grandkids is also a great way to teach them about healthy baking, such as healthy oils, low-fat or low-sugar recipes, sugar replacements etc. Once you’ve mastered baking with your grandkids, then you can move onto cooking whole meals with them!
