How to Live: A Search for Wisdom

While researching his latest book, How to Live: A Search for Wisdom from Old People (While They Are Still On This Earth), award-winning writer Henry Alford interviewed a wide variety of people over the age of 70 in an effort to deduce their hard-won wisdom.

"[It] was both the most fun and the most traumatic project I've ever worked on. The most fun because I got to interview and hang out with some truly fascinating and hilarious people—like a woman who walked across the country at age 87 in support of campaign finance reform, even though she had emphysema and severe arthritis…. and I'll never forget my tour of Sylvia Miles's bathroom, where she keeps her two Best Supporting Actress nominations, among many, many, many other items. But it was the most traumatic project I've worked on because of the way that my interviewing inadvertently set off a dramatic change in my mother and step-father's 31 year-long union. That part of the project was freakish and unexpected. And, no surprise, that's the part of the book that readers have really been responding to. You can always rely on family to deliver the sucker punch."

Alford, who has written for the New Yorker, the New York Times, and Vanity Fair, is also author of a humor collection Municipal Bondage and Big Kiss. One reviewer (Eric Weiner) said this about HOW TO LIVE: "Never sappy, always candid, and occasionally exhale-linguini-out-your-nostrils funny, HOW TO LIVE actually lives up to its audacious title."

Aging is a time of great self-mastery, said Alford during a visit to Seattle. The people he interviewed were becoming more ambitious, wiser, and more wonderful as they age, he said. And scientific evidence shows that we do, indeed, grow wiser as we grow older.

While Alford was in town to promote his book, he was featured on KUOW (94.9FM). During the interview, KUOW invited listeners to share their nuggets of wisdom:

  • No matter how old you are, don’t ever give up on something you think you’d like to do, jump right in and start to do it even if you ache all over. If you have a passion, follow it and be glad.
  • Be compassionate with yourself and others. Be grateful and let go of any illusions of control.
  • Don’t wallow in regrets – adversity can be a friend. Keep a positive outlook and remember that even a kick in the rear is a step ahead.
  • Though moderation in all things is good advice, don’t be too cautious in life – go for it, really live!
  • Exercise everyday. Staying in shape physically is very important – it makes you feel good about yourself.
  • Family is important. Treat everybody as nice as possible and stay as humble as possible.
  • Watch your tongue and consider how your words affect others. Thoughts on a long marriage: Wisdom is knowing what to overlook.
  • Have solid friends and faith, be money-wise and humble with lots of humor because life can’t be planned for – you react to it.
  • Use your time wisely because you can’t get it back.
  • Keep busy, read a lot, exercise, learn something new everyday. Look out for people who might need a smile or a helping hand. When in pain, say 'this too will pass.' Enjoy your children and grandchildren. Don’t give advice unless you’re asked.
  • Laugh about your senior moments. Respect yourself and others, especially the elderly.
  • Life throws us so many spitballs, the more tools we have to deal with life the better, whether it be religion or art appreciation or secular wisdom.
  • Look at life and others through the lens of love.
  • Don’t let physical incapacity change the way you relate to others or to life.
  • Keep intellectually active and enjoy what you’re doing – do stuff that is stimulating and that you find fun.
  • To paraphrase Julia Child: There is no substitute for real butter – don’t live your life by proxy. Be the star in your own movie.

If Alford had hoped that the senior citizens he canvassed would drop pearls of life wisdom into his tape recorder, it didn’t exactly work out that way.

Alford talked with Phyllis Diller, Harold Bloom, and Edward Albee. He met with an 87-year-old retired aerospace engineer, a noted aphorist, and an 86-year-old Japanese-American academic who had been interned during World War II.

The result is How to Live: A Search for Wisdom from Old People, an uneven yet wryly humorous read that ultimately delivers rewards.

Alford interviews, trolls the Bible and Socrates, and solicits aphorisms from seniors. The thoughts of the interviewees are not always inspired and there are moments when – despite Alford’s moxie and sly humor – the process drags.

Certain core elements of wisdom do, however, finally emerge: things like detachment from ego, a questioning mind-set, an interest in the common good.

Then, among the less radiant encounters, appear a few gems of human experience, such as the buoyancy of spiritual teacher Ram Dass, who embraces life in a wheelchair with joy, and the astonishing grace of Althea Washington, a retired teacher who lost her husband and all worldly goods in Katrina, yet kept a "blazing smile" that "could light a small country."

How to Live also pays tribute to resilience, a quality embodied by Alford’s mother and stepfather, whose story, as they divorce after 36 years of marriage, is interwoven throughout the book.

But perhaps Alford’s most potent discovery is that old people are not so different from young. Their wisdom is liberally mixed with "unwisdom," and yet they occasionally astound with flashes of humor, courage, and grace.

And at any age, it seems, it is the most fortunate – Alford’s mother and his elderly cat, for instance – who retain the special blessing of being able to inspire affection.
